Protecting Privacy in Connected Learning Toolkit

The purpose of this document is to help School Systems navigate some of the privacy issues that can arise when selecting and using an online service provider. The original version of this document focused on some of the obligations School Systems need to comply with under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), as well as suggested industry practices to protect the privacy of student information. This most recent version, released in September 2014, also includes at-a-glance summaries of the two other Federal privacy laws applicable to K12 School Systems, the PPRA (Protecting Pupil Rights Amendment) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act).
